The Best Marketing Lesson I Found on an Ottawa Street Pole

Walking through Ottawa this week and this stopped me cold.

Street poster stapled to a wooden utility pole in Ottawa with a QR code and the headline "Your ex isn't coming back. But indie pop is." promoting the single RADIO/STEREO by Akeem OH

A pole. A staple-covered flyer. A QR code up top. And under it, in big bold type:

"YOUR EX ISN'T COMING BACK. BUT INDIE POP IS."

No band logo splash. No polished ad. Just a street poster, promoting a new single called RADIO/STEREO, dropped in the middle of a sidewalk in a way that made me stop, laugh, and actually take out my phone.

One line. Emotional hook, humor, zero explanation needed. It works because it doesn't try to sell you the song, it sells you a feeling you already recognize.

This is a masterclass in restraint. Most businesses want to say everything on the page. This poster says one true thing and trusts you to fill in the rest.

Sometimes the best marketing is a staple gun, a good line, and the courage to leave everything else out.
