Why Founders Can’t Delegate (and How to Start)
Last week, a founder told me she was drowning in day-to-day operations.
I asked why she was not handing anything off.
“Nobody will do it as well as I do.”
I get it. I have said those exact words.
In my first business, I found it really, really hard to delegate. It was my baby. How could I let someone else touch it?
So I held on. And I drowned.
Eventually, I learned three things:
1. Hire well.
2. Delegate well.
3. Build systems.
Did balls get dropped? Of course.
But if someone else can do 80 to 90% of what you do, you are left with 10 to 20%. That beats drowning in 100% every single time.
Sometimes the hardest thing in business is trusting someone else to do a great job.
But you have to. Not just for the business, but for yourself.
You need a life where your phone is not ringing nonstop. Where Slack is not running your evenings. Where you can step away and the business keeps going.
You do not just do it for growth.
You do it for your sanity.
If you are the founder who says “nobody can do it like I can,” I have been there. Let’s talk about what you can hand off this week.
I’m Dhana Kannan, a fractional COO. I help founders build businesses that can run without them.
