The Radiant Rhino Series Part 10: The Lessons That Stuck After Five Years of Building a Consumer Brand

I wrote a 9-part series about building a consumer brand from scratch and running it for over five years.


This was my first full-time entrepreneurial venture (I had two side hustles before this.)


Here’s what building The Radiant Rhino actually taught me:


1. Selling is the most important skill in business.

If you can’t sell, it’s not a business. It’s a hobby. And a rather expensive one.


2. It’s not about having all the resources. It’s about being resourceful.

Money, time, connections help. But figuring things out with what you already have is the real skill. In business and in life.


3. Entrepreneurship is lonely.

You should be okay with that. Entrepreneur groups help. Especially people who understand why you’re stressed about things no one else even notices.


4. The responsibility is real.

When you have a team, you show up. Even when life is messy. Even when things are hard. Because people depend on you for their livelihoods.


5. It builds resilience you didn’t know you had.


6. The learning curve is steep.

I learned more in one year of running my own business than in a decade of working for others.


7. It is the hardest thing I’ve done professionally.

It made my PhD feel like a casual side quest.


8. I know the stress you don’t say out loud.

As I build my second business (why do I keep choosing the struggle?), I now advise founders at different stages. Having been in their shoes gives me perspective. And probably a familiar sense of panic.


Building The Radiant Rhino taught me more about business than any business school ever could.


This series was a behind-the-scenes look at my first company. The decisions. The lessons. The chaos.


What I didn’t expect was how often those same lessons show up in my work with founders today.


Because once you’ve lived it, you don’t stop using it.


You just apply it better.
