The Productivity Hack No One Talks About: Why Rest Makes You a Better Leader

The wedding I almost missed and what it taught me about rest
I thought taking a break would slow me down. It did the opposite.
Last week, I attended a dear friend's wedding. The timing felt impossible. My calendar was full. My brain was full. My to-do list had its own to-do list.
I was working right up until the moment I had to leave the house. Laptop open. One more email. One more “quick thing.”
Translation: I was probably flirting with burnout.
But I went anyway. For a few hours, I stopped being productive. No laptop. No notifications. No solving operational bottlenecks between appetizers. Just laughter, music, and connection.
The surprising part? I came back the next day sharper, more creative, and more energized than I had felt in weeks.
It reminded me of something many leaders forget: You do not always get your best ideas by pushing harder. You get them when you finally give your brain space to breathe.
We often treat rest like a reward for being productive. In reality, rest is what makes productivity possible.
Sometimes the most strategic move, the ultimate productivity hack, is to step away before burnout makes that decision for you. Go to the wedding. Take the evening off. Slack can wait. Cake cannot.
